The following is a review of Starstruck taken from this months edition of GCN.

Here is a young Offaly singer/songwriter/musician with a definite musical future. Louise Killeen has just won a recording contract in New York and so this self-produced EP could well become something of a must-have.
Starstruck is a collection of songs you will find yourself humming long after listening to them. and it is that memorable quality that makes Louise Killeen stand out above the rest.
This EP platforms five songs, two of which are co-written and performed with Shana Wilkie who provides gentle, seamless harmonies on Furthest Thing and Endless Possibilities.
Starstruck, the title track, and Furthest Thing are reminiscent of early Mary Black, but Killeen's delivery on both songs provides a much more sensual echo than Black ever demonstrated.
Endless Possibilities is a gentle feelgood singalong to the wonders of falling love and may not be to every cynic's taste, but this short collection does get under even the toughest skin and revitalizes jaded emotional responses with simple arrangements and poignant lyricism like those on Never About You.
The final track, Stars in the Morning gives an indication of Killeen's potential as a songwriter, a song about unnamable longing shows she can give voice to complex emotions as well as the more obvious ones. This one gets you in the solar plexus with its minor key and beautifully rendered performance. Killeen's music lingers like a good kiss.

Louise Plays the ruby sessions on Tuesday the 21st october, doors open at 9pm.

Congratulations to Louise, Collie and Mick on winning the "Joyces Open Mic" competition on Sunday night in Kiltimagh. The contest was staged with 6 bands competing, notably the excellent "Lost Souls" and the young and sure to be succesful "Peril".
Thanks to everyone who supported Louise from far and wide (Guatemala, Galway, Claremorris, Donegal, Dublin, Belfast, Derry and Shannonbridge) and thanks to the excellent organizing comittee at Joyces (Mick, Cáit, Vanessa, Martin, Joe and Co.). An excellent night of music was had from 8pm on with the results being announced at 3am (a unanimous verdict!).
First prize is a week in New York with flights, accomodation and recording studio time included!. We'll keep you posted on progress and hopefully will post some of the new music to the site when it becomes available. That's all for now.

Louise and band (Collie and Mick) will be playing in a battle of bands competition in the N17 night club, Kiltimagh on 12th of October (2003) come on along if you're around.
